Valentine’s Day 2023 has here, and as you can see, there are many budding romantic relationships, passionate sweethearts, amicable gift baskets, broken hearts, one-sided lovers, hip singles, and some “sigma” individuals (payasathil elaykka pole allelum kanumallo) all around you. Valentine’s Day may be a celebration of love, but its past has a very different tale to tell. Here are some lesser-known details about Valentine’s Day’s history.
In the past, all soldiers serving under the Roman emperor Claudius II Gauthicus in the year 270 CE were prohibited from getting married. These marriages were forbidden. Valentine, a priest, disobeyed this directive and officiated secret weddings. He was reportedly apprehended and imprisoned, where he became friends with the jailer’s daughter. In a letter to the girl, the priest signed it, “From your Valentine.” He wrote it in his final letter before being executed on February 14. The name “Valentine,” which is frequently used to describe someone’s romantic interest on this day, is supposed to have been inspired by this tale. According to certain documents, this holiday’s name may have been influenced by the bishop St. Valentine of Terni. They might be the same, by chance.
Although St. Valentine and his selfless deed of love are connected with the name Valentine, the custom that underpins this holiday is not particularly romantic in its roots. It is said to have its roots in the Pagan Roman festival of Lupercalia, which took place at the beginning of spring and during the time when birds mate. Priests in their underwear would slap ladies with animal hides as they ran through the streets. This action was thought to encourage conception. They were then drawn at random and matched with men. The festival has become less attractive and more intoxicated throughout the years as a result of being Christianized.
Because every bird goes there on Valentine’s Day to select his partner, this happened on that day. The aristocracy of the day started sending poetry as Valentines to the people they loved. From that moment on, the entire day was a love affair.
Commercial wish cards first appeared in the 18th century, then formal Valentine’s Day texts in the 16th century. Richard Cadbury started a brand-new marketing strategy in 1861. He designed heart-shaped boxes and used them to sell their assortment of chocolates. This quickly gained popularity. Even today, chocolate boxes in the shape of hearts remain in high demand.
This Valentine’s Day, I sincerely hope you experience love, abundance, and prosperity. If not, though, don’t stress. To encourage female friendship, several occasions, including Galentine’s Day, are observed by gift-exchanging between female friends. The inclusion of all genders is growing. Therefore, give that pair of shoes to your closest buddy who has been giving you screenshots of vinegar Valentine cards, which were first used in the 1800s to tease or inform someone that you despise (well, don’t do that because today is the day of love, not hatred).
