
A seaside city in California’s San Mateo County, Half Moon Bay is about 25 miles (40 km) south of San Francisco. 11,795 people were living there as of the 2020 census. Pillar Point Harbor and Princeton-by-the-Sea, an unincorporated settlement, are located immediately to the north of Half Moon Bay. Mavericks, a spot for big-wave surfing, is well-known in Half Moon Bay. Due to its crescent shape, the bay is known as Half Moon Bay.
The town was first established in the 1840s as San Benito, a farming offshoot of Mission San Francisco de Ass, and when its Anglo fishing community grew, it was given the moniker Spanishtown. Half Moon Bay was given to it once more in 1874. The town expanded as a result of early 1900s rail and road links. Due to its coastal location’s foggy weather, the town became a hub for booze smuggling during Prohibition.

2023 shooting spree
A shooting rampage took place at Half Moon Bay on January 23, 2023. Eight individuals were badly injured and seven people were killed when a shooter opened fire at two farms. Geography
Nearly 25 miles (40 km) south of San Francisco, 10 miles (16 km) west of San Mateo and 45 miles (72 km) north of Santa Cruz is where you’ll find Half Moon Bay at 37°27′32′′N 122°26′13′′W[12]. The “Jetty,” or “The Breakwater,” is a well-liked location in Half Moon Bay. This breakwater in Pillar Point Harbor is man-made, and the peculiar waves it produces are sculpted by reflections from the barrier. Just north of Half Moon Bay, Montara State Marine Reserve and Pillar Point State Marine Conservation Area extend offshore from Montara. These marine protected zones, like undersea parks, aid in the preservation of ocean life and marine ecosystems.
